🏆 What Are Groups and Grades in Horse Racing?

All races in the UK are divided into Classes 1–7, with Class 1 being the very best.

Within Class 1, there are two systems depending on the racing type:

- Groups used in Flat racing

- Grades used in National Hunt (Jump) racing

These races attract the top horses, biggest prize money, and most betting interest, so knowing what they mean can help you spot the highest-quality action each week.

🐎 Flat Racing Explained: Group Races

In Flat racing, Class 1 events are split into Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, and Listed level.

🥇 Group 1

The pinnacle of Flat racing, featuring world-class horses running at level weights. These are the most prestigious races on the calendar.

🥈 Group 2

Just below Group 1, often acting as trials or stepping stones to the top level.

🥉 Group 3

Strong races featuring talented horses looking to break through to higher levels.

📈 Listed Races

Races just below Group level, often showcasing horses on the rise aiming to prove they can compete among the best.

🏇 National Hunt Explained: Grade Races

For Jump racing, the structure is similar, but instead of “Groups”, races are split into Grades.

🥇 Grade 1

The most prestigious National Hunt races, run at level weights and featuring the very best jumpers.

🥈 Grade 2

Still high-class contests, though some horses may carry small weight penalties for previous wins.

🥉 Grade 3

Usually handicap races, meaning horses carry different weights based on ability. Despite that, they’re still major events.

📈 Listed Races

Competitive races just below Grade 3, often featuring horses climbing the ranks toward the big stage.
